You find this chain of islands just after Cornwall. Its pretty cool!
- The 1000 islands parkway is also a favourite way to go.
Here are a few more details about the 1000 islands parkway.
From East:
If you are coming from the East, a nice drive is to get off the 401 and take the Thousand Island Parkway into Gananoque.
Gananoque is a cute little town just east of Kingston and worth a little look. It has a nice main street and city hall and there is waterfront that you can check out too.
To get to it take the exit (ON THE LEFT) just after Brockville on the 401. You’ll see the Green sign with YELLOW Letters for the exit. It winds along the St Lawrence river. Its really relaxed and beautiful.
Stop at the Ivy Lea Club in Ivy Lea, for Ice Cream! Its pretty Fancy and really picturesque. Lots of weathy americans come over on their yatchs to have dinner and lunch. My wife did the Logo for the club. Check it out!
Oh and also don’t take the 401 to Kingston after your time in Gan. Take hwy 2 into Kingston. Its way more interesting and just as fast!
Once you’re near Kingston, you will go past Fort Henry, and Royal Military College, and then through the rock cut and over the bridge and you’re right into downtown Kingston.
From Ottawa:
For a beautiful scenic drive down from Ottawa to see the landscape, you can’t get better than taking hwy 10 ( The perth Road) down from Perth, through Westport and then on to Kingston. Its a beautiful road with some breathtaking stops along the way. Foley Mountain just before Westport gives awesome views of Frontenac County.
If you have the time and are interested, take the 417 West out of Ottawa and the Hwy 7 West through Carleton Place and into Perth.
Perth is an amazingly beautiful little town and well worth a look.
After your time in Perth, look for Hwy 10 south ( the Perth Road) and take it down to Westport
Westport is also a wonderful little village and nice to do a slow drive through or get an icecream cone on a warm day.
Then continue on to Kingston down the same Hwy 10 on to Kingston.
The roads are winding and beautiful and with the leaves changing colour it will be a wonderful drive today.
From Toronto:
Coming from Toronto you might consider a scenic drive through Prince Edward County and enter Kingston by the ferry at Glenora and then along Hwy 33 along the water.
You will pass through the lovely little towns of Consecon, Bloomfield, Wellington and Picton. Sandbanks provincial park and beach are there as well as lots of wineries, ciderhouses, organic food stands, and interesting and beautiful roads to travel.
Once over the bay on the ferry (its free) you will pass through Bath and see Amherst Island and all the windmills they are putting up over there, and then on into Kingston either right down Princess Street or continue along the water to pass Kingston Penitentary, Queens University and KGH and then through Market Sqaure and downtown.
To take the scenic route, look for the Exit 525 and take the Loyalist Parkway – HWY 33 off the 401 after Brighton and just at Trenton. A warm sunny day might be ideal for a stop at Sandbanks Beach.
